The contest format
How the NSMQ works
Each National Science & Maths Quiz contest puts three schools, two contestants each, through five rounds. Here is what happens in each one.
Round 1
Fundamentals
Each school answers four questions each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics: 16 in all. A question a school does not answer correctly can pass to the other schools as a bonus.
Round 2
Speed Race
Applied questions are thrown to all three schools at once and schools ring a bell to answer. A correct answer earns up to three points, with no part-marks.
Round 3
Problem of the Day
Each school solves one problem worth 10 points in a limited time. The worked solution is checked against the consultant’s solution and marks are given for each section. Looking at the problem before time starts has been penalised.
Round 4
True or False
Eight statements in all, two for each subject. A correct answer earns 2 points and a wrong answer costs 1. A statement can be declined.
Round 5
Riddles
Four riddles, one per subject. Clues are read one at a time and schools ring in: 5 points on the first clue, 4 on the second, 3 on the third or any later clue.
