Round 2: Speed Race · Mathematics · Prelims

A fair coin is tossed three times. Find the probability of obtaining an even number of heads.

Show answer

Answer

  1. 1.Define the random variable X as the number of heads in n = 3 tosses of a fair coin, so X ~ Binomial(n=3, p=1/2).
  2. 2.Use the binomial formula P(X=k)=C(3,k)(1/2)k(1/2)3−k.
  3. 3.Compute P(X=0)=C(3,0)(1/2)3=1·1/8=1/8 and P(X=2)=C(3,2)(1/2)3=3·1/8=3/8.
  4. 4.Sum the probabilities for even k: P(even heads)=P(0)+P(2)=1/8+3/8=4/8=1/2.

Round 5: Riddles · Mathematics · One-Eighth

  1. 1.I am the most important and most used measure of dispersion.
  2. 2.I give a single number that indicates how spread out data are around their mean.
  3. 3.I have the same units as the original data.
  4. 4.I equal the positive square root of the variance.
  5. 5.My common symbols are σ for a population and s for a sample. Who am I?

Questions people ask

01Is Fomla free?

Yes. Fomla is free on Google Play. A one-time premium unlock removes the ads and opens everything, including the Full Contest mode.

02Where do the questions come from?

From NSMQ contests broadcast between 2017 and 2026: 5,111 questions, transcribed and checked. Answers were reviewed, and a worked solution is shown only when it matches the answer.

03Does it work offline?

Mostly. Drills, lessons and shortcuts work without data. The League and its daily challenge need an internet connection.

04Is Fomla part of the official NSMQ?

No. Fomla is an independent study resource. The NSMQ is organised by Primetime Limited with the Ghana Education Service, who do not sponsor or endorse Fomla.

05How are the books different from the app?

The app is for timed, auto-marked practice and the League. The books are printable: every contest with answers and worked solutions, plus practice papers with keys at the back.

06Is there an iPhone version?

Not yet. Fomla is on Android through Google Play.
